Fort & Key

A Quick Note

Hey All,

No idea who will read this, if anyone. It feels more appropriate to say this here than making a Medium post, and there's not really a great way to communicate this outside mainstream Social Media.

I'm taking a break this week. I've acquired some downtime, so there will be no post this Wednesday. Sorry to disappoint, but I promise to be back next week, and with a bit bigger post.

However, I would like to say how thrilled I am how so many people want to hear what I have to say. These past couple months have been great, and I've really enjoyed spending time writing for you.

As a final note, and as to not leave you with nothing, I wanted to talk about some books. In my opinion, the act of reading is one of the best ways to improve your Dungeon Mastery. If you haven't yet, or have only watched the TV series, you should try reading A Game of Thrones / The Whole Song of Ice and Fire series. It's really well crafted, and such a fantastic book series.

I'd also recommend you check out Gene Wolfe's various series, especially The Book of the New Sun. Honestly, I haven't fully digested enough about the first two books to say... really anything about it. I know I loved it, but I can't quite say why.

Lastly, check out the world first mainstream fantasy trilogy: Dante's Divine Comedy. Having come out in the 1300s, it's a well-crafted epic poem about a man's journey through the afterlife. My favorite part about it is how it gives a twist to the Christian canon by including various famous philosophers, poets and leaders among the ranks of the dead, as well as offering a more nuanced version of the Christian afterlife than how it usually is. Check out the John Ciardi or Hollander translations, along with Gustave Doré's gorgeous artwork.

Anyway, have a nice week everyone. I'll be back shortly.

Fight on!
